It’s hard to understand why any organization would move their operation from Philadelphia to Virginia. We know that many business ventures are leaving Philadelphia due to the 4% wage tax in the city. Still, that doesn’t explain such a drastic move.
New Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade came to the Atlantic 10 from the ACC, which is headquartered in Charlotte, NC. This is likely the first and foremost reason why the A10 will now call Newport News, Virginia home.
With the additions of St. Louis and Charlotte, the A10 has definitely spread, and spread South and West. At the same time, Philly is still the home to 3 of the conferences schools.
Why did the majority of league presidents approve this relocation of the conference offices? Beyond McGlade’s clear preference for the South, it has to be a financial savings argument that has the schools convinced.
Currently Newport News is best know as the former home of Michael Vick’s “Bad News Kennels” to many sports fans. Hopefully, the A10 can change this will some success going forward.
