Steve Buckley is reporting that UMass is considering joining the MAC for football. We have heard rumblings in the past, but this time it seems something might really be stirring.
Buckley really seems to be pushing the likelihood of this move. He writes:
Athletic director John McCutcheon, while saying “it would be premature” to announce that the Minutemen gridders are moving up, noted that, “We continue to evaluate where we are with our program.”
Buckley also spoke to an anonymous MAC source. The person said the conference is “exploring” the possibility of adding the Minutemen for football.
Although on the surface this has no impact of UMass basketball, a move for football creates certain ramifications down the road for hoops. Whether this simply draws more attention to UMass Athletics (and thus basketball), or even segways the entire athletic program into a new conference, changes are a large possibility.
Much more on this as details emerge.
